ABBOTT GOVERNMENT GUTS EMERGENCY RELIEF
The Abbott Government has ripped $10 million a year worth of support for Emergency Relief for victims of natural disasters, domestic violence and the homeless, Senate Estimates has revealed today.
242 organisations across Australia which applied for Emergency Relief funding have received absolutely nothing.
This is the most appalling display of this heartless Government's wretched values.
Bushfire victims, flood victims, homeless people and people fleeing family violence will all be affected.
While Minister Morrison's bridging finance provides some relief, it's really a bridge to nowhere for local organisations across the country.
Minister Morrison should hang his head in shame.
Appearing in Senate Estimates today, representatives from the Department of Social Services confirmed:
"…there will be about $10 million less than there was in 2013/2014"
Of the 650 service providers that were contracted to provide emergency relief in 2014/2015, 537 applications were received for funding in 2015/2016. Of these, just 295 organisations have been successful.
Many of these organisations receive less than $10,000 in funding for Emergency Relief. Now that funding has gone.
The impact these cut will be felt by vulnerable Australians rights across the country.
This Government makes the people who can least afford it do all the heavy lifting, while giving tax breaks to multinational companies.
The Government should immediately reverse this cut and restore the $270 million it has stripped from community grants.
