LABOR WELCOMES SUPPORT FOR CARERS AUSTRALIA BUT GOVERNMENT MUST DROP CARER CUTS

Labor has welcomed the Prime Minister's pledge of up to $2 million of funds raised on this year's pollie pedal, to Carers Australia. Carers Australia is the national voice of carers in Australia and deserves support and certainty to continue their fantastic work.

Now the Prime Minister must back up his words of support for carers with actions. The Abbott Government has legislation before the parliament that seeks to slash indexation of the Carer Payment, leaving more than 220,000 Australian carers up to $80 a week worse off within ten years.

After promising no cuts to pensions, the Prime Minister now wants to cut payments to low income and fixed income carers who already face enormous cost of living pressures.

On average carers spend approximately 40 hours per week providing care. The estimated annual replacement value of care provided by informal carers in 2012 was over $40.9 billion.

Cuts to the Carer Payment is not the way to support the people who sacrifice so much to carer for their loved ones. Labor calls on the Prime Minister to drop his unfair cuts to the Carer Payment.
